CLUB Inc
Psychology Department Internship
The internship for CLUB Inc. is a great opportunity for students who are perusing a career in clinical or counseling psychology. The following is an outline of the current job description and obligation for BYU-I students interested in the CLUB Inc. internship.
CLUB Inc. is a mental health agency in Idaho Falls, ID that offers a wide range of mental health services. They have an adult partial care unit, child partial care unit, a substance abuse recovery program, and an emergency and transitional housing unit. It is the goal of CLUB Inc to benefit and improve the lives of individuals with mental health and/or substance abuse issues. CLUB Inc also offers other services in therapy but interns would be less involved with these services.
Prerequisites: Transportation, passing grade in Psych 342 Abnormal Psychology, criminal background check, and an interview with Dr. Richard Cluff and MarDee Harper, Executive Director of CLUB Inc.
Requirements: This internship will require a minimal commitment of 2 credit hours which equate to 100 hours of service.
Stipend: A stipend of $2.50 per hour will be provided to help defray the cost of transportation to and from the internship site. This stipend will be a "lump sum" amount based on the total number of enrolled credit hours i.e. 2 credit hours = $250.00, 3 credit hours = $375.00.
Internship description: It is the intent of CLUB Inc to rotate interns through each service unit mentioned above. The following is a description of each.
Adult partial care: Within the adult partial care unit, interns have the opportunity to interact with a number of individuals currently suffering from a wide range of mental health diagnoses. Intern responsibilities include: helping fulltime staff with behavior management, stress management, life skills, communication skills, etc. Periodically clients seclude themselves from the group. Interns would be expected to recognize when this happens and encourage the individual to come back and be involved. Interns also have the opportunity to be involved in group therapy by encouraging client participation and giving positive verbal reinforcement for their participation. Clients have records on location that interns are permitted to see. This will help them better understand the needs of the client. However, a strict code of ethics requires confidentiality for all client information.
Child partial care: Within the child partial care unit, interns have the unique opportunity to work with the spectrum of childhood disorders. These children are great to work with. Intern responsibilities are similar to the adult partial care in that you still help with behavior management, stress management, life skills, and communication skills. Interns also assist as aids to the therapists during group sessions. Child work presents its own challenges, not the least of which includes their high rate of activity.
Substance Abuse: This part of the internship is two fold. First, you are the line of communication from the client to the therapist. You'll check messages and answer a security locked door where clients enter for group sessions. Second, after the session is underway, interns are permitted to sit in on group sessions as observers. This is a great opportunity to see what life and therapy is like for those overcoming addiction. It is also provides the opportunity for interns to observe and learn methods of therapy applied to addiction.
Housing: As mentioned above, CLUB Inc offers emergency and transitional housing for many people. These homes include a number of "safe-homes" for our clients. When certain individuals are in vulnerable positions due to substance abuse, violence, homelessness etc, CLUB Inc assists by providing these clients safer places to live. Many of these homes house people who need someone to monitor for signs of depression, suicidal behavior patterns, or other emergency situations. Interns are assist fulltime staff, in monitoring such occurrences.
