Financial Aid & Scholarships
Don’t let the cost of college be a reason not to attend BYU-Idaho. There are several services provided by the BYU-Idaho Student Financial Aid Office that can help students pay for their education. These services include grants, scholarships, loans, federal financial aid, and state financial aid.
Federal Financial Aid: Federal Financial Aid includes grants, loads, and scholarships that are awarded to students by the government. To apply for federal financial aid, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. We encourage everyone to apply as early as possible to ensure that your aid will be available when school starts. More information about these programs and how to apply is provided on our Web site. BYU–Idaho’s school code is 001625. By filling out the FAFSA you are automatically considered for the following types of aid:
- Pell Grant
- Academic Competitiveness (AC) Grant
- SMART Grant
- Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans
- Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)
Grants: A grant is need-based money awarded to students and does not have to be repaid. A scholarship is money awarded to students who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in academics, leadership, service, or talent. Loans are borrowed funds that, unlike grants and scholarships, builds interest and must be paid back.
All university aid grants are need-based and do not have to be repaid. In order to be considered for a grant, you must first fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.edu.gov. Once this has been completed, an additional BYU–Idaho application, located at www.byui.edu/financialaid, must be submitted. These grants will be awarded contingent upon the completion of certain requirements designed to provide basic understanding of fundamental financial principles. Scholarships: The BYU–Idaho Student Financial Aid Office offers various awards to students who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in academics, leadership, service, talent, or major. Scholarship funds are provided through sacred resources of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and offerings of generous donors to the university. They represent an investment in students’ education and are given to enhance students’ spiritual, intellectual, and physical growth. State Financial Aid: State Financial Aid includes grants, loads, and scholarships that are awarded to students by the government. Many states provide grants to residents who attend college. Some states require students to attend college in their home state to receive these funds. Contact your state’s Department of Education to see if they offer grants. States that routinely offer grants to students studying at BYU–Idaho are Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Alaska, Vermont, and Idaho. One scholarship offered to Idaho residents is the Robert R. Lee Promise Scholarship.
