Preparation Checklists


  1. Fill out the three track questionnaire: Your admission decision is not complete until you have been assigned a track. In order to receive your track assignment you must submit the three track questionnaire found at web.byui.edu/admissions/questionnaire. You will be notified of your track assignment by mail. Your track assignment letter will also include instructions on how to accept your admission to BYU-Idaho.
  2. Accept your admission: Follow the instructions on the track assignment letter you received in the mail. When accepting your offer you’ll also be able to re-declare your major, fulfill registration requirements, and set up your student email account. Please note that you must accept your offer before you can register for classes, finalize your housing contract, etc.
  3. Reserve housing: Student housing options can be found on the BYU-Idaho Housing office’s website, www.byui.edu/housing. To learn about how you and your roommates can help each other grow and make the most of your apartment life, check out the BYU–Idaho Student Living program at www.byui.edu/studentliving.
  4. Review dining options: All students can benefit from University Food Services offerings through the Dining Dollars program. Learn more at www.byui.edu/foodservices.
  5. Visit my.byui.edu: This page will help you start using your BYU-Idaho email account. Email is the official method of communication of BYU-Idaho, so check your account often. You’ll also find financial, advisor, and other information on this page.
  6. Create financial plan/apply for Financial Aid & Scholarships: Visit www.byui.edu/financialaid to find out what kinds of federal financial assistance or scholarships for which you may qualify. The BYU–Idaho Student Financial Aid Office can help you design a financial plan for your entire college experience; learn more by calling (208) 496-1015.
  7. Investigate off-track options: Cont. Ed, Quest, Summer Session, Fast Grad: If you’re starting at BYU–Idaho later than anticipated , our Continuing Education program offers some enrollment options such as Summer Session, Quest, and more that may be of interest in helping you plan your calendar. Learn more at www.byui.edu/ce or call (208) 496-1040. If you’re interested in an accelerated, year-round program available after you’ve earned 50 credits, visit www.byui.edu/fastgrad.
  8. Check registration dates: After your admission, you’ll be mailed information regarding when you can register. This information is also available online at www.byui.edu/registration.
  9. Pay registration deposit: A $60 refundable registration deposit is required before you can sign up for classes. This can be paid online under the Student Services link at my.byui.edu.
  10. Create a four-year plan: BYU–Idaho strongly encourages you to develop a four-year or two-year course schedule prior to the start of school. Your college’s satellite office of the Career & Academic Advising Center is the place to start. Find your satellite office at www.byui.edu/advising.
  11. Register for classes: With your two- or four-year plan prepared, you’ll be well prepared when registration opens. Registration is done in order of earned credits. Check your registration date and other related information at www.byui.edu/registrarsoffice.
  12. Reserve books online/laptop initiative: Save time by reserving and purchasing your textbooks online from the University Store at www.byuibookstore.com. BYU–Idaho strongly recommends each student to have a laptop computer. Premium pricing and support are available through the University Store. Learn more about the laptop initiative at www.byui.edu/laptop.
  13. Submit Privacy/Grade forms: Following your admission, you’ll receive correspondence from the BYU-Idaho Student Records & Registration Office explaining university privacy policies and academic standards information. If so desired, submit privacy and grade notification forms before beginning your studies. (See www.byui.edu/registrarsoffice for more information about these forms.)
  14. Look for student employment: Information on both on- and off-campus student employment opportunities can be found at www.byui.edu/studentemployment.
  15. Arrange student insurance: Students must carry BYU-Idaho insurance unless they are covered by their parent’s insurance plan or a group plan provided by their employer or a spouse’s employer. If you qualify for the waiver under these terms, you may submit the insurance waiver online at my.byui.edu.   16. International Students also need to do the following as a new student:
    • Pay Sevis I-901 fee: Visit www.fmjfee.com (You will need your I-20). Print your receipt.
    • Apply for F-1 Student Visa: Apply at the U.S. consulate or embassy in your country. (Canadians do not have to apply for a visa.)
    • Plan travel to BYU–Idaho: Plan to arrive no more than 30 days before classes begin. Plan to check in with the International Services Office within two weeks of arrival. (Failure to check in may result in problems with employment, immigration status, etc.)
  17. Attend Get Connected: Get Connected is program designed to orient new BYU–Idaho students to campus programs, services, and atmosphere. Review the Get Connected schedule online at www.byui.edu/getconnected and make the necessary travel arrangements to participate.
