Ensembles Participating in Sacred Music Series 2009  

  

Collegiate Singers

 

Collegiate Singers, conducted by Dr. Randall Kempton, is one of the premier off-campus performing choirs at Brigham Young University-Idaho. Comprised of 40-50 of some of the finest singer/musicians on campus, this group gives both singers and audience members an exciting experience with a wide variety of musical styles and periods. Collegiate Singers generally tours every other year in addition to many on- and off-campus performances. As part of the 2008-2009 experience, the Collegiate Singers toured Alaska, sang in the Priesthood Session of April General Conference, and served as the chorus in the summer opera (Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas). Additional performance events included Handel’s Messiah with the Baroque Ensemble, the Duruflé Requiem with Symphony Orchestra, and the Spring, Fall and Winter Choirfests.

 

Men's Choir

 

The Men's Choir, conducted by Dr. Kevin Brower, is an all-male chorus of 80 - 100 singers sure to thrill audiences of all ages. The Men's Choir repertoire ranges from barbershop to Gregorian chant, from sacred hymns and spirituals to the best of Broadway and Hollywood, and from serious classical music to popular a cappella. In addition toperforming independently, the Men's Choir combines regularly with the Women's Choir for special performances announced at the beginning of each semester. During the 2007-2008 year, the Men's Choir participated in many events, including the annual Barbershop Festival, high school outreach programs, “Christmas in the Snow”, and BYU-Idaho’s presentation of Savior of the World. 

 

Women's Choir

 

The Women's Choir is an auditioned choir of 90-100 ladies, directed by Dr. Eda Ashby, designed to provide an opportunity for skilled, talented ladies to perform choral music together, and to serve the Lord, church, university, and community through music. Members of the group improve their skills and develop leadership through class organizational work, special rehearsals, and public performances of high quality traditional and modern choral literature. Women's Choir rehearses Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 3:15-4:15. In addition to performing independently, the Women's Choir combines with Men's Choir for larger works and special occasions, including Handel's Messiah, the Sacred Music Project, and the annual Barbershop Festival. 

 

Symphony Orchestra

 

Symphony Orchestra & Sinfonietta represent the premiere ensembles of the orchestral program at BYU-Idaho. Personnel for Sinfonietta are drawn by invitation each semester from members of the Symphony Orchestra, according to repertoire needs. The Symphony specializes in full orchestral literature of the 19th and 20th centuries and presents the popular Halloween concert, bi-annual operas, Sacred Music Series and regularly features both student and professional guest soloists. Sinfonietta performs standard orchestral literature of the 18th century as well as string and chamber orchestra literature from all style periods. Sinfonietta regularly tours both domestically and internationally.
