ENG 106L Lesson 9 PDF

Discussion

Part 1: Together with your Speaking Partner, brainstorm and write a list of as many things as you can think of that are similar between the United States and your culture. Then make a second list of things that are different between the United States and your culture. After you have made the two lists, choose one item from the list of similar things and together compare and contrast how it is the same and how it is different between the cultures, even if it differs in small ways. Then, choose an item from the list of different things, and compare and contrast it just as before.

Part 2: Either choose one or more cultural item from one of your lists to compare and contrast or another cultural item that you are interested in discussing, such as the following:

  1. BYU-Idaho student life
  2. Family life
  3. Christmas or Easter traditions
  4. Church activities
  5. Dating
  6. Hobbies
  7. Free-time activities

Speaking

Part 1: Choose a topic from the topic list for Week 9 for your Speaking Partner to compare and contrast. Ask any questions you have related to the topic they described.

Part 2: Your Speaking Partner will choose a topic from the list for you to compare and contrast. Provide any background information necessary for him or her to understand what you are describing, and then compare and contrast that item. Answer any questions the Speaking Partner may have.
