Blog
Overview
A blog is a location on the web (website) where entries are written frequently. Blogs are commonly used to provide news on a particular subject or to share journal or other personal information. Blogs are usually text based but some will include images, music/audio, and video.
Wiki
Overview
A wiki is a website with one or more pages that allows people to edit content collectively. A wiki starts off with one (home) page and then adds additional pages as the collective work begins. Wikis are usually used for collaborative websites. This allows a class, business, or other organizations to collaborate with their work. Many companies are using wikis to build intranets and knowledge management systems.
Here at this university and others, group projects are sometimes done using a wiki. One way this could be done is on the home page of the wiki, the group will define the project and have an outline of it. They will then create a new page to work on one of the outlined items from the homepage.
Discussion Board
Overview
A discussion board is a website that works much like a bulletin board. It is a place to post your ideas and have others respond to them, or a place to respond to ideas others have posted. Discussion boards are commonly used to carry on a conversation over the internet when not everyone is logged on at the same time.
A forum is simply a part of the discussion board that contains conversations about a given topic. A discussion board may contain multiple forums which are open to everyone or which are assigned to specific people.
A thread is one of the conversations within a forum. A thread consists of an origianl post (which may be a comment or an attached document), and all the responses to that post as well as responses to comments others have made.
Podcast
Overview
A podcast originated as a broadcast for an iPod. That is to say that it is a video or audio file that is posted to a website where others can watch/listetn. Podcasts are different from ordinary video and audio files in that it is possible to subscribe to podcasts. This means that new podcasts are downloaded automatically as the publisher posts them. There are many sources of podcasts from radio and television networks, to the instructor of your I-Learn course.
