Today’s assignment is to discuss the following: What are the principles that make up a good leader?

In the reading assignment that you will read later this week, it states that Jesus is the Ideal Leader. Here is a list describing what He did to be a good leader:

  • Jesus prepared Himself.
  • He loved the people He led.
  • He taught His disciples the purpose of His work.
  • He based His leadership on the principle of agency.
  • He gave His disciples tasks that were meaningful and challenging.
  • He showed He was responsible both to His purposes and to His people.
  • He was a good listener.
  • He often helped His followers think through their own ideas by asking them questions. This helped them understand what He was trying to teach them.
  • He was consistent in obeying the commandments.

(from “Developing Leadership,” Lesson 29, The Latter-day Saint Woman, Part B)

Discuss the leadership qualities listed above with your Speaking Partner. You may also want to discuss the following questions:

  • What does being a good leader mean?
  • What are qualities of a good leader?
  • Describe any good leaders you have met?
  • If we have leaders, then we have followers. Discuss what a good follower is.
  • What are qualities of a good follower?
  • What can followers do to help their leaders?

Read the following excerpt (part of an article or book) to your Speaking Partner. Read it one time through, and discuss pronunciation, unfamiliar phrases, or vocabulary words. Discuss what you think the excerpt is about.

The Need for Good Leaders and Good Followers

People everywhere are looking for someone to follow—for someone to lead them. A leader is a person who goes ahead of others to direct or guide them or to show them how to do something. Leaders not only tell others what to do and how to do it, they also show them by example. Leaders help others grow.

We look to our parents and friends and to our community and Church leaders for direction and leadership. We listen to their words and observe their actions. Often we pattern our lives after the advice they give us, or we follow what we see them do. Teachers lead us as they instruct us, and we learn to follow their instructions.

Each of us is a leader. Nearly every person at some time, somewhere, in some way leads another person or a group. Our lives touch the lives of others, and we influence them whether or not we intend to. Our influence, which is different from that of anyone else, is our leadership.

(from “Developing Leadership,” Lesson 29, The Latter-day Saint Woman, Part B)

Read the excerpt a second time, and then discuss with your Speaking Partner the qualities that make a good leader. You can begin with the following qualities:
  • Persuasive
  • Long-suffering
  • Gentleness
  • Meekness
  • Sincere Love
  • Kindness
  • Charity
