Pathway consists of a modular approach, as illustrated in the four steps outlined below. This model combines the flexibility of taking courses online with the benefits of gathering together with other students on a regular basis. It is also intended to ease students into obtaining a degree, keep education affordable, and provide marketable opportunities at each level in the process.
During the first year of Pathway — called Academic Start — students are eased into the rigors of college life with a light course load. Each semester students take just one online academic class from BYU-Idaho as well as one religion class (either from their local institute or online through BYU-Idaho). Students are also required to participate in a weekly gathering where they build camaraderie and meet for additional instruction.

At the end of Academic Start, students may advance into BYU-Idaho's Online Degree Program. (Students may also consider other options, including attending a local college or trade school, or applying to attend BYU-Idaho on campus in Rexburg.) To be eligible for the Online Degree Program, students must have obtained a minimum "B" average 3.0 GPA during Academic Start and get an ecclesiastical endorsement from their bishop (only BYU-Idaho courses count toward the GPA; institute courses do not). Students will continue to take courses online at the same low tuition rate and can work toward the following options:
