Clinical Arrangments
In order to successfully secure clinical in a timely manner please:
- Start to arrange clinical rotations early.
- Finalize arrangements at least three weeks before the semester starts.
- Realize some hospitals prefer two months notice.
Past students have failed their courses because they waited until the semester started to make these arrange clinical.
How do I arrange those hours?
To begin the process of arranging clinical hours, please follow these steps:
- Identify the area (unit) and number of hours needed. (Please refer to the course syllabus for specific hour requirements.)
- Identify the hospital at which you wish to complete the hours.
- Determine which coordinator to contact first: the BYU-Idaho coordinator or the Hospital coordinator.
- Email the clinical request to the appropriate coordinator.
- Fill out and submit all necessary documentation.

Submit clinical request
When formally submitting your request to the appropriate coordinator, please specify the following:
- Course name (if contacting the hospital directly)
- Course requiring the clinical hours
- Desired or required area of clinical rotation
- Number of hours needed
- Scheduling needs (try to be as flexible as possible)
What documentation do I need to fill out?
The documentation you need to fill out depends on the course and hospital requirements. Generally speaking, before a student can start a clinical rotation, the following documents must be in place:
- An Affiliation Agreement or an RN to BSN Preceptorship Agreement
- A hospital specific packet
Affiliation Agreements
This document is drafted by the legal counsel of both BYU-Idaho and the partnering organization. Formalizing these agreements takes a significant amount of time. Once in place the agreement applies to all BYU-Idaho BSN nursing students for the duration specified therein.
Generally, only hospitals frequented by our students seek to establish such an agreement.
RN to BSN Preceptorship Agreement
When an Affiliation Agreement does not exist between BYU-Idaho and the medical facility you seek to complete clinical hours at, you will need to fill out RN to BSN Preceptorship Agreement form and obtain the appropriate hospital signatures.
Students are required to have a RN to BSN Preceptorship Agreement Form signed by the legal authority for the medical facility where they are completing their clinical. This is a legal agreement between BYU-Idaho, the student and the medical facility which enables you to complete clinical practice at that particular facility. It is your responsibility to have this agreement signed prior to beginning any of the following courses: Nursing 327, 330, 449 or450
If a hospital informs you that an Affiliation Agreement is preferred, please realize the formalization process could take longer than a full semester to finalize.
Hospital Packets
These packets generally contain information about the hospital and required hospital forms you need to submit to the hospital. Each facility and organizations packet will vary.
If a packet is needed, the hospital coordinator will provide you the packet. IHC coordinators have provided the following:
- IHC Orientation HandbooK
- IHC Packet for employees
- IHC Packet for non-employees
- IHC Badge information
- IHC H1N1 (flu) procedures
