Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN)
Associate of Science in Nursing: General Info
The Department of Nursing offers a two year program leading to an Associate of Science in Nursing. The graduate is then eligible to take the registered nurse licensing examination (NCLEX-RN). The RN program for incoming LPNs will be individualized. LPNs should follow the same admission procedures.
Clinical Facilities
BYU-Idaho Nursing students complete hospital experience at Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg; various nursing homes in Rexburg and Idaho Falls; Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, Idaho Falls Care Center, Eastern Idaho Regional Behavioral Health Center in Idaho Falls; Bingham Memorial Hospital and State Hospital South in Blackfoot, as well as working with other community agencies. Students will need to provide their own transportation.
Selection of Candidates
The faculty of the Nursing Department recommends that students apply to several nursing schools. Due to the large number of applicants, admission to any nursing school is very competitive; consequently, all who are qualified cannot be admitted.
Traditional Track
Traditional track candidates are ranked according to their individual college GPA. The admission council will review the individual applications and the students college transcripts (Paying close attention to science classes) and to their general GPA. Completed prerequisites and science classes taken are valuable to the acceptance process. It enables the admission council to see that students have interests in completing nursing. Success in difficult science classes can be related to the difficulty of taking nursing classes, thus, a simple comparison can be made of the students ability to pass nursing classes. A conditional admission into the program will be made contingent upon the completion of all prerequisite courses with a "B" or better grade. Approximately 32 candidates are selected to the traditional track each semester
Alternate Track
Alternate track candidates are ranked according to their individual college GPA or their core class GPA (Bio 264, Bio 265, Chem 101, Psych 310, Child Development 210, and Math 108 or 110) whichever is higher. Students accepted into the alternate track will take nursing classes during the day time with the traditional students but clinical and lab time will be in the evenings and/or on Saturday's. Approximately 10 students are accepted to the Alternate Track each semester.
College Applicants
Acceptance into the Nursing Program is based on college GPA and evaluation of college courses and credits (not to exceed 48 cumulative credits at the time of selection) Students with greater than 48 credits will only be considered for the Alternate Track.
Prerequisite Courses
There are a series of course requirements for those being accepted into the Nursing Program. See "Prerequisites and Requirements."
Program Requirements
After being accepted to Brigham Young University - Idaho and prior to starting the nursing courses, the student must complete the items listed under "Prerequisites and Requirements."
Career Outlook
The new graduate can function as a beginning staff nurse in hospitals and in a variety of health agencies. Those who wish to pursue a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing may do so at BYU-Idaho or transfer, without difficulty, to other colleges.
