The Department of Music at Brigham Young University-Idaho invites students, employees and members of the Rexburg community to submit hymn texts for use in the 6th Annual BYU-Idaho Hymn Festival to be held Wednesday, Feb.16, 2011. BYU-Idaho music students will create a tune and harmonization for the chosen texts.

Submissions don't have to be entirely original to be considered; adding an additional verse, or verses, to an existing hymn is permitted. Hymn texts can address a variety of gospel topics. The Department of Music would especially like to encourage the submission of hymn topics not widely covered such as baptism, covenants or tithing. The Department of Music asks that submitted texts follow a common poetic meter.

"The Hymn Festival is a wonderful opportunity for members of the BYU-Idaho community to add to a rich tradition of hymnody. Over the last five years of the festival, we have been uplifted by the inspired poetry that has been submitted. We are looking forward to many new hymns this year that will invite the Holy Spirit into our hearts and lives," said Daniel Kerr, an instructor in the Department of Music.

Submissions are due Friday, Nov. 5, to Daniel Kerr in Room 246 of the Eliza R. Snow Performing Arts Center. All submissions need to include a name, address, phone number, e-mail address and a scripture reference that supports the text.
