New online events calendar created to better serve campus community

A new improved online events calendar has been developed at Brigham Young University-Idaho. The new calendar is now available through the "Calendar" link on the BYU-Idaho home page or at http://web.byui.edu/calendar.

The system will display all university events starting with the most current, said John Mackenzie, a senior programmer and analyst at BYU-Idaho who helped design the calendar.

"Students and employees can view events by the day, week, or month," said Mackenzie. "Each event posted on the calendar will have a brief synopsis of the activity that can quickly expand to give the location, sponsor, time, Web address and if the event is ongoing or not."

The original online calendar no longer met the needs of the university because it was not user friendly and was not able to efficiently handle the large number of events typically scheduled on campus.

The new calendar has been upgraded to include features the old calendar did not have, including larger text and simplified navigation. Events can be displayed by categories, with more specific listings for the Activities Program and performing arts. The system also allows users to select weekly or monthly views and provides information on how to submit an event for posting on the calendar.

"The improved online calendar will benefit the entire campus community," said Merv Brown, manager of University Communications. "The online calendar is user friendly and will help students and employees find and post events quickly."

The calendar was developed by Mackenzie and Darick Carpenter, a programmer/analyst and recent graduate of BYU-Idaho. They worked with the Activities Program and other university leaders to create the new calendar.
