BYU-Idaho organ recital to feature music of Daniel Gawthrop
Dr. David Pickering, assistant professor of music at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, will perform a free organ recital Tuesday, August 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Barrus Concert Hall of the Eliza R. Snow Center for the Performing Arts.
Pickering will perform organ pieces by American composer Daniel Gawthrop, including "O Jerusalem: A Symphony for Organ." Three pieces will be arrangements of Latter-day Saint hymns, including "The Morning Breaks," "Come, Come Ye Saints" and "With Humble Heart."
Gawthrop has been commissioned to write over 100 pieces or original music and his works have been published by groups such as Warner Brothers, Dunstan House, The Sacred Music Press and others.
Prior to instructing at the Univeristy of Lamoni, Pickering received his doctorate degree in organ performance and a master's degree in organ performance and musicology from the University of Kansas. He received his bachelor of music degree from Brigham Young University.
He has competed in several organ competitions in the United States and Europe and received the Kay Carlson Memorial Scholarship as a competitor in the Kansas City Musical Club Scholarship Auditions.
Pickering is a guest recitalist on the noon recital series in the Salt Lake Tabernacle, where he plays the 206-rank Aeolian Skinner organ. Among his many upcoming recitals Pickering will play in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City.
