Ryan Nielsen, trumpet and jazz: Praised as a musician of "high intelligence, tremendous instrumental skill, and outstanding creativity" by jazz icon, John McNeil, Dr. Ryan Nielsen has been playing the trumpet since the age of 11. His love of music and trumpeting has grown ever since, leading to a Masters Degree in classical trumpet performance from Arizona State University, and a doctorate in jazz performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Dr. Nielsen grew up in a musical home in Rexburg, Idaho, and has gone on to record with such artists as Corey Christiansen, Brent Jensen, Jon Bishop, Jay Laurence, Justin Nielsen, Rakalam Bob Moses, John Lockwood, and Clark Sommers. He has performed with such icons as Harvey Mason, the New York Voices, Eric Marienthal, Kevin Mahogany, Brian Bromberg, Byron Stripling, Wycliffe Gordon, Conrad Herwig, Delfeayo Marsalis, Kobie Watkins, John McNeil, Tiger Okoshi, and the Summit Brass (which included such brass legends as David Hickman, Ronald Romm, Alan Dean, Robert Tucci, and Dan Perantoni). Dr. Nielsen's recent album "Weeds in the Wall," recorded with the band Sister and Brothers, is an eclectic blend of folk, bluegrass, americana, and jazz music (available on itunes). He also recently recorded an album of experimental world music with vocalist Bisan Toron, and pianist Justin Nielsen (to be released 2014). Dr. Nielsen's love of teaching has garnered him a reputation as an effective and inspiring clinician throughout the intermountain west. He has received many awards for his playing, including the Doc Severinsen award for outstanding classical and jazz trumpeting and first place at the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival. Dr. Nielsen is an alumnus of BYU-Idaho.
