FUNDING your EDUCATION at BYU–Idaho

Tuition

BYU–Idaho is a private university with a current tuition of $1320 per semester. US News and The New York Times report a national average of approximately $10,000 for one semester at a private university and $5,000 at a state/public university. The average tuition for state/public universities in southeast Idaho and northern Utah is $1645.

BYU–Idaho is sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A significant portion of the cost of operating the university is paid from the tithes of the Church members similar to taxes subsidizing state universities. State schools charge 3 times more tuition for non-resident (out-of-state) enrollment; BYU–Idaho charges 1.5 more tuition to non-LDS students.

Scholarships

One should always consider the dollar value of a talent award or scholarship in relation to the initial tuition expense. A $5,000 scholarship at a university that charges $10,000 per semester is not as valuable as a $750 scholarship at a university that charges $1320 per semester. Which school has the most remaining fee to pay? According to a recent presidential study reported in the US News (4/19/04), the quality of education is not necessarily reflected by the cost of tuition.

Music Talent Awards

One need NOT be a music major to receive a Music Talent Award.

Funds are available for talented students in all areas of the Department of Music. In the Woodwind Area, for example, two
scholarships are given for each instrument every year (flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon), one half tuition and one quarter tuition. Often more aid can be provided through additional scholarships or greater amounts. All music scholarships are renewable each year. This is significant because some universities offer scholarships for the freshman year only.

On campus auditions are held the second weekend in February each year. In addition, regional off-campus auditions are held the first weekend of February each year.
