The Principles of Mentoring

Mentors help teach, prepare, minister, and connect with BYU-Idaho students to help them flourish.

Breaking Down the Principles of Mentoring

We mentor students as we teach in ways that edify and inspire, prepare students for meaningful employment opportunities, minister to individual students, and connect students with helpful university resources.
Teach
  • Mentors prepare students to use their knowledge, talents, and professional skills to strengthen their families, the Church, and their communities
  • Mentors inspire students to be lifelong learners and teachers who build the people around them and add value wherever they serve
  • Mentors help students gain confidence in their ability to work through difficult problems
Prepare
  • Mentors help students learn how to solve problems, think critically, communicate effectively, and work well with others
  • Mentors counsel with students about their academic challenges, educational strategy, and professional goal
  • Mentors maintain high standards of excellence and professionalism
Minister
  • Mentors take an interest in individual students and learn their names
  • Mentors seek divine guidance in counseling with students about their academic challenges, educational strategy, and professional goals
  • Mentors exemplify the virtues that will help students succeed, including faith in Jesus Christ and integrity
Connect
  • Mentors connect at-risk students with university resources
  • Mentors follow up with students to ensure they are utilizing university resources
  • Mentors collaborate with other employees to support the success of individual students
