The depth of data science is best learned by practice in the field.

The BYU-I data science degree requires students to complete a full time (> 30 hours a week) internship over the period of a semester. Internships offer an opportunity for students to gain experience in their industry. Many of our students complete more than one internship during their undergraduate studies. Below are some highlights of recent student internships.

Internship Highlights

Cody J | The Intelitech Group

Used machine learning methods to predict payout of debts. Worked with data from a SQL server with over 100 million observations with little structure or guidance. Great atmosphere and co-workers. Data was fairly messy. Small data science team, I worked very closely with the executive team.

Jason F | Henry Schein Practice Solutions

Using R to clean, visualize, and use machine learning to predict marketing data. You get to work close with the company's data scientist, and be involved with business decisions. Relaxed and friendly working environment.

Matt H | Research & Business Development Center

Worked on a team with multiple data science majors and supported the development of analyses and products for agriculture analytics. A collaborative team and comfortable work environment.

Dayton H | Gulfstream Aerospace

Used R to write algorithms to search external databases for information on potential customers and perform statistical analysis and visualization on large datasets. The data science program is small and new, but the manager is an amazing guy and I loved working there.
