Test-out Option
You may visit the BYU-Idaho Department of Mathematics (232 Ricks Building / ph: 496-3050) to request an authorization card--allowing you to take the test-out option exam(s) in the BYU-Idaho Testing Center. You may initiate this test-out option if you have passed Math 109, 110, 112, 113, 119, 221, 222, 223, or 224 or equivalent from another college or university.
The Test-out Option includes the following:
- To prove competency in personal & family finances by passing the Financial Mathematics Exam.
- To prove competency in
basic probability & statistics, students must pass the Statistical Literacy Exam. Note that this exam may be waived if you have previously passed a collegiate statistics course of 3 credits or more.
- To apply basic financial mathematics to a life-planning spreadsheet project that is very practical and applicable to the your future. Tutoring is available and the time commitment tends to average between 10 and 15 hours. A hard copy of the project can be picked up at the math department upon successfully passing the financial mathematics exam noted above.
- Please note that both exams are 25 questions and written in multiple-choice format. 60% is a passing score and there is one retake available. With a modest amount of preparation, students tend to do well on the exams overall. Resources are available to help you study for the exams and project (see Math 108 Resources and E-Resources). If you are still unable to pass the exam after trying the retake, you will need to take the course FDMAT 108 rather than completing the test-out option.
