As the Academic Office makes more teaching assistants available for faculty, they are also piloting a training program to teach TAs skills that will save faculty time by providing them with the skills they need to be effective workers. The first two trainings that are available to the TAs are a New Assistant Introductory Training and an I-Learn Training, under a program called the Specialized Student Teaching Program.
The New Assistant Introductory Training is a one-hour workshop for new TAs that introduces ways that students can better collaborate with faculty by returning and reporting, taking initiative, and maintaining confidentiality. Additional training resources for TAs are also explained. The first of five sessions of this training will be held on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at 5:00 pm. To sign up for this training, have your TAs go to this page.
The I-Learn Training is a one-hour workshop to aid TAs with understanding the faculty side of I-learn to efficiently navigate, troubleshoot, and create the learning environment students will experience through your I-learn course. The first of three sessions of this training will be on Thursday, September 13, 2012, at 5:00 pm. If you would like your TAs to attend this training, have them go to this page.
More information on the Specialized Assistant Trainings, as well as additional training dates, is available on the Specialized Assistant Training Webpage.
"The basis of this program is to help save faculty time," said Brother Brian Schmidt. "By providing trainings that will teach our TAs the basic functions of I-Learn, as well as addressing initiative and confidentiality issues, the TAs can essentially hit the ground running."
If you do not yet have a teaching assistant, faculty members can apply now for a TA for fall semester by completing this form. Upon approval, the student assistants will be hired through the faculty member's department. Once the application has been approved, the Academic Office will transfer the approved amount into the department account.
