Handheld Computing Device Policy

 

 

Purpose

This policy addresses purchasing and support issues for handheld computing devices or Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) at BYU-Idaho.

 

Supported Models

The number of brands and models of handheld computing devices is ever growing and changing.  Support will be provided for the two most common handheld operating systems:  PalmOS (includes Palm/HandSpring) and Windows CE (includes iPAC/Pocket PC).  Additional information detailing recommended and supported handheld computing devices will be posted on the website and updated by Information Technology (IT).

 

Device Ownership

Both personally owned and university purchased handheld computing devices may be utilized on campus.  Limited technical support will be available through the IT Division to facilitate connection of these devices to the campus calendaring and email system.

 

Purchase Authority

Department Chairmen, College Deans or Directors may approve requests for handheld computing devices where the value of the device is less than $200.  Purchase requests for devices that exceed the $200 limit, must be approved by the respective Vice President.  To receive approval, these devices must be used for business purposes a minimum of 70% of the time and significantly enhance the individual’s job productivity.

 

Exceptions

Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by CTC.
