Using Microsoft Outlook (Windows) @ BYUI

Microsoft Outlook is the market-leading email client.  It's also the most-widely used client on campus.  Whether you're currently using the 2010 or 2013 version, here are a few tips:

If you log on to a campus computer with your credentials you should only have to open Outlook and click through the setup prompts.  It should automatically recognize and populate your email address.


What's New in Outlook 2013

  • Save and share files in the cloud.
  • View "All" or "Unread" items with a single click.
  • Reply to or delete a message directly from the reading pane.
  • Peek views give you quick looks into your calendar, tasks, etc. without even having to click.
  • Check the weather forecast right there in Calendar view, along with current conditions.

        • When you first open Outlook your email address should populate in the "E-Mail Address:" field.  Click Next >.  Outlook should automatically complete the setup for your account.  Click Finish.  This first time it will take longer to load as it is preparing Outlook for first use.

    1. Move and change panes (View > Layout)
    2. Collapse the ribbon (Ctrl+F1)

Rebuilding a Profile

  • If you are still using the following procedure after 2/2015, please contact the Email Team through the Help Desk so that we can get to the root of your issue.  This workaround was only meant to be temporary.

If you are having trouble with your department mailbox after the migration follow these steps:

  1. Go to your student email through
  2. Click on your name in the top right
  3. Click on "Open Another Mailbox..."
  4. Type in the email address
  5. If that works follow the steps in the next section. If it does not work send an email to with the name of the mailbox and the roles that need access to the email.

Follow these instructions if you were able to open the mailbox following the instructions above (or if a coworker was able to open it following those instructions) 

  1. Exit Outlook and Close Lync completely
  2. Click on "Start"
  3. Type in "run" and hit enter
  4. In the window that opens enter "Outlook.exe /profiles" (Just copy and paste this in) and hit "OK"
  5. When Outlook opens and asks for the profile click "New" and enter "new" as the profile name (It can be named anything, this is only for display purposes)                                     
  6. Type in the email address (leave everything else blank) click "Next > "
  7. It will search for setting then ask for a password. Put in your username followed by "" (This is not your email address) if my username was "ssadmin" I would enter "". Then enter your password.
  8. If you have more mailboxes to add then click on "Add an additional mailbox..." and repeat steps 6 and 7
  9. Click on "Finish" once it finishes. Outlook will ask you for a profile.
  10. Click on "Options>>" and check the box that says "Set as profile default"
  11. Open Click on "OK"
  12. Outlook may prompt you for your username and password again. Follow step #7 and make sure to use your and to check "Remember my credentials"
