Introductory Internship (RM 298)

Information

  1. Students will complete this between their sophomore and junior year.
  2. All Recreation Management students need to complete an introductory internship. 
  3. Students will register for RM 298 to complete this internship or complete the hours by submitting them to the academic advisor (see number 8).
  4. Students must have completed a minimum of 12 credits of RM courses.
  5. Internship requires 400 hours of experience with direct recreation program leadership responsibilities as either a staff employee or a volunteer.
  6. Students may not count mission service or RM classwork/RM class trips as credit toward their 400 hours.
  7. You may count hours after high school graduation that go toward your 400 hours.
  8. To verify your hours, you must provide either a letter from a supervisor or pay slips. Documentation should show the dates of the field work and your positions title.

*If you feel that you have completed these requirements from a previous experience, contact your academic advisor.

Preparation

Before you register for RM 298 be sure to have these items in order:

  • Student has completed a minimum of 12 RM core credits.
  • Internship picked out that will meet the 400 hour requirements.
  • Internship supervisor picked out who will submit your 1 page evaluation form
  • Be aware of the 4-page essay that you will submit at the end of your internship.

You can register for an internship via I-Plan, the new online tool for academic planning.

To learn how to register for your internship through I-Plan, click the button below and follow the directions. After submitting the internship registration through I-Plan, your form will be sent to the internship coordinator for approval. After the approved registration form is processed, you will receive an email from the university internship office notifying you that you are approved to register for 3 credits of RM-298 or RM-498R.

Registration Instructions

Rec Management Senior Internship (RM 498)

Information

  1. Students will complete their senior internship in their final semester. 
  2. All Recreation Management students need to complete a senior internship. Students will register for RM 498 to complete this internship.
  3. Students must have completed a minimum of 24 credits of RM courses.
  4. Internship requires 400 hours of experience (introductory internship hours are disqualified).
  5. Senior level internships should have responsibilities that would fall under roles such as high level management program planning, or supervisory responsibilities.
  6. Students should work closely with a mentor in the organization they are working for. 

Preparation

Before you register for RM 498 be sure to have these items in order:

  • Complete a minimum of 24 RM core credits.
  • Pick out an internship that will meet the 400 hour requirements.
  • Be aware of the journal you will keep to document your experiences, which you will submit at the end of your internship. The journal will consist of four sections. Section I will be submitted after completion of week 1 of the internship. Section II will be submitted at the end of the 4th week of the internship. Sections III and IV will be submitted at the end of the 16th week of the internship. Photographs are encouraged.

Registration Instructions

Therapeutic Rec Senior Internship (RM 498B)

Information

  1. Students will complete their senior internship in their final semester.
  2. All Therapeutic Recreation students need to complete a senior internship.
  3. Students will register for RM 498B to complete this internship.
  4. Students must have completed all course work.
  5. Internship requires 560 hours of experience over 14 consecutive weeks under a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. (Introductory internship hours are disqualified.) 

Preparation

Before you register for RM 498B be sure to have these items in order:

  • Complete all course work.
  • Complete 400 hours of experience prior to senior internship. 
  • Pick out internship that will meet the NCTRC requirements for an internship.
  • Be aware of the journal documenting your experience, senior project, agency paper, and additional items, which you will submit at the end of your internship.
