Students who get married during the semester need to plan to live in Approved Housing until they are officially married. Marriage is not grounds for leaving a contract early. Students are still responsible for any contracts they have signed. A common solution is to purchase a block contract for the first half the semester so the student does not have to pay the full semester price or if they have already purchased a contract, to sell the balance of the contract to another student.
In certain circumstances, a student can apply for an exception to live in community housing for short time before the marriage. These are considered on a case by case basis but are typically not granted for any period of time more than 3 weeks.
Updating Your Marital Status
Name and Marital Status Updates are handled by the Records & Registration Office.
From their website:
To change your name and/or update your marital status, complete the Name Change / Change in Marital Status Form and submit it to the Student Records and Registration Office (Kimball 190) with documentation of the name change (marriage license, divorce decree, Social Security card or driver's license with your desired name, etc). You can also fax these documents (208-496-5003) or mail them to BYU-Idaho, KIM 190, Rexburg, ID 83460-1640 or email it to email@example.com.
If you have had a hold placed on your account, please contact our office after your marital status has been updated (you should receive an e-mail) and we can lift that hold (they have to be lifted individually).
After marriage, it will be important to update your marital status and new address promptly. If the system sees you as a single student living in community housing it will place a hold on your account. This hold will affect your ability to register. Holds that go unresolved can develop into an Honor Office issue.
