the work of the Lord, the obstacles before us are never as great as the power behind us." Elder Dallin H. Oaks
Access email with another program or service (POP3)
Many email programs, such as, Hotmail and Gmail will allow you to retrieve messages from another email address using a process called POP3. BYU-Idaho does not directly support connecting a POP3 account to any clients except Outlook or Entourage, but if you choose to use a different application, the below configuration will allow you to download messages.
- Mail Server or Incoming Mail Server: Enter pop3.byui.edu
- Outgoing Mail Server or SMTP Server: Server used for sending e-mail. Note: BYU-Idaho does not support the sending of mail from this type of service from off-campus. You can either fill this in with the mail server of an ISP (e.g. mail.yahoo.com) or check with your ISP for the correct server name. For sending email from on-campus use smtp.byui.edu through port 587. See SMTP Options.
- E-mail address: This is the BYU-Idaho e-mail address from which you wish to retrieve mail.
- Username or Account Name: If your netid is johndoe123 and your email address is doej@byui.edu, Your Pop3 username is BYUI/johndoe123/doej. Note that a forward slash leans upward to the right and is usually located on the keyboard below the question mark (?).
- Password: This is your regular password associated with your BYU-Idaho Net ID.
- Leave copy of messages on server: By default, POP3 will extract your e-mail messages from your BYU-Idaho mailbox. Make sure to leave a copy of the messages on the server so that you can still access them through the BYU-Idaho Exchangesystem.
- Retrieve new messages only: If this option is available, you will likely want to select it. Otherwise you may receive multiple copies of each of your messages.
If your mail is not retrieved automatically once your configuration is complete, look for an option to Send/Receive or Check Mail.
