Access email with Outlook or Outlook Express (IMAP)

 

IMAP Quick List

Incoming Mail Server:  mail.byui.edu
  (Also, check the option for SSL or server requires a secure connection)
Outgoing Mail Server: your ISP's (Internet Service Provider) outgoing mail server (e.g. smtpauth.earthlink.net if you have internet access through Earthlink)
Account name or Username: enter students, your NetID, & the first part of your email address separated by forward slashes (e.g. students/NetID/smi02005)


The included screenshots are taken from Outlook Express, but the settings shown work for both Outlook Express and Outlook.

  

  1. Open Outlook Express.


  2. Click Tools > Accounts.


  3. Select the Mail Tab.


  4. Click Add and select Mail.
  5. Enter your name and click Next.



  6. Enter your e-mail address and click Next.


  7. Select IMAP from the dropdown list. Enter mail.byui.edu for the Incoming mail server.


  8. If your computer is off campus, enter the name of your ISP's mail server (e.g. mail.yahoo.com). You cannot leave this field blank; however, if it is filled in incorrectly, you will still be able to retrieve your BYU-Idaho e-mail, but you will not be able to send mail using this program.


  9. Click Next.


  10. Fill in the Account name field. If you are a student, enter the word students, your Net ID, and the first part of your e-mail address separated by forward slash characters (e.g. students/netid/smi02005). If you are an employee, enter byui, your Net ID, and the first part of your e-mail address separated by forward slash characters (e.g. byui/netid/smithq).


  11. Uncheck Remember password and click Next.


  12. Click Finish.


  13. Select the account you just created and click Properties.


  14. Select the Advanced tab.


  15. Under Incoming mail, check This server requires a secure connection (SSL).


  16. Click OK.


  17. Click Close.


  18. Any time you are prompted for a password, use the one associated with your BYU-Idaho Net ID.
