How do I synch a Palm compatible device?

Configuring Outlook to synchronize with a Palm OS device requires installation of several different software packages, depending on whether or not you would like to synchronize your email.

To configure synchronization without email you must install the Palm Desktop, PocketMirror v2, and PocketMirror v3.

To configure synchronization with email you must install the Palm Desktop, PocketMirror v2, PocketMirror v3, and then the Palm Desktop again.

Installation instructions for each of these packages are included below.

Install Palm Desktop

  1. Click the Start menu and select Run. Type in the following path: \\1ccs\install2\Palm Software and click OK.

  2. In the new window that appears, double-click PalmDesktop_401_ENG.exe.
  3. Once the welcome screen appears click Next.
  4. Click Next again.
  5. Click Next to select the default installation location.
  6. At the Create User Account screen enter your Byu-Idaho user name in the User Name field. Click Next
  7. After installing, you will be asked if you want to configure your mail settings now? If you wish to synchronize your Outlook mail with the Palm device, click Yes. Otherwise, click No (skip to step 11).
  8. If you selected yes, choose Microsoft Exchange 5.0 or higher from the list presented.
  9. Select your Outlook profile. Click Next.
  10. Congratulations. Click Next.
  11. Click Finish.

Install PocketMirror v2

  1. Assuming the Palm Software folder is still open, double-click the PocketMirror folder.
  2. Double-click the Version 2 folder.
  3. Double-click Setup.exe folder.
  4. Click Next at the welcome screen.
  5. Click Yes to accept the license agreement.
  6. Click Next to accept the default location.
  7. Click Next again.
  8. Click Next to accept the program folder.
  9. At the Select Conduits screen check the boxes next to the email folders the user would like to synchronize. Click Next.
  10. Click Map the Outlook category directly to the handheld category. Click Next.
  11. Click Next to begin the installation.
  12. Setup is complete. Uncheck both check-boxes. Click Finish

Install PocketMirror v3

  1. Go back to the \\1ccs\install2\Palm Software\PocketMirror folder.
  2. Double-click the Version 3 folder.
  3. Double-click PMStdUpdate.exe.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Click Yes to accept the license agreement.
  6. Click Next to accept the default location.
  7. Click Next to accept the program folder.
  8. Check the same boxes as in step 9 of the PocketMirror v2 installation. Click Next
  9. Click Next to begin the installation.
  10. Setup is complete. Uncheck both check-boxes. Click Finish

If you do not wish to synchronize with email you are finished. To perform the synchronization, right-click the HotSync icon in the system notification area.

Make sure the cradle type is selected (USB or Serial). Place the Palm device in the cradle, and push the HotSync button on the cradle.

If you want to synchronize with email you must complete all of the above steps and then re-install the Palm Desktop software using the instructions below.

  1. Go back to the \\1ccs\install2\Palm Software folder.
  2. Double-click PalmDesktop_401_ENG.exe.
  3. Once the welcome screen appears click Next.
  4. Click Next again.
  5. Click Next to select the default installation location.
  6. At the Third-Party Conduits Detected screen click Keep the third-party conduits. Click Next.
  7. Click Yes to perform mail setup.
  8. Click Yes to change mail setup.
  9. Choose Microsoft Exchange 5.0 or higher from the list presented. Click Next.
  10. Select your Outlook profile. Click Next.
  11. Congratulations. Click Next.
  12. Click Finish.
