BYU-Idaho asks that all students have a laptop computer to assist in homework, research, writing and other steps of the learning process. Some courses will require the use of a laptop in class as well - However, since the BYU-Idaho Learning Model encourages active involvement in classroom discussions, laptops are not generally used for taking notes in class.

A Windows laptop will normally meet the needs of the vast majority of students, particularly for those majors where another brand requirement has not been specified. Where there is no specification students may pick the platform they prefer (Windows or Apple).
