Brigham Young University - Idaho

Purpose

In order to establish conformity and the highest level of reasonable service to the students, faculty and administration at BYU-Idaho, these standards have been developed and described in the following sections. By adhering to these standards we hope to ensure a richer educational experience for the attendees of this institution.

Scope

This document describes the services offered via wireless and the hardware required to access the system.

Standards

Hardware

• Wireless Cards/Client Adapters

The system is designed so that any WIFI certified 802.11a or 802.11g card should interface with this system. Dual mode 802.11a/g cards should work as well. Most cards will work with the system. If you are having trouble contact the Help Desk in the McKay room 322 or call them at extension 9000.

Security

• Access

Access to the wireless network is based off of your domain account. To get on you need to provide your username and password.

• Encryption

There is no encryption services provided from the wireless network. If you are dealing with sensitive data please make sure you are using a secure protocol such as Secure Socket's Layer (SSL) or Secure Shell (SSH).

Quality of Service

Coverage Area

The hotspots map (http://www.byui.edu/wireless/map.htm) shows the coverage areas for each of the hotspots. Every effort will be made to ensure these areas are covered.

Supported and Compatible Platform and Operating Systems

While almost any hardware platform and operating system will be compatible with the system, we only guarantee services will function properly when used with the following operating systems:

• Windows 7 / Vista
• Windows XP
• Mac OS 10.x or Above

Services and Protocols

The services available over the wireless network are:

• Web browsing
• Pharos Printing
• Secure Shell Access (SSH) to the Linux Lab in the Austin
