My advising area is with majors and minors in exercise and sports science. This is an area we haven’t discussed a lot in our department. I spend most of my time when advising, showing students the options in their area and any sequence of classes that may be helpful to them. I check to see that they are moving toward finishing the requirements for their area of study.

I am certified as a sports performance coach with USA Weightlifting. I have coached football, basketball, track and field and strength training for 34 years. I was the head track and field coach for the men and women at Ricks College from 1987-2000. During that time we won 25 out of 26 Region 18 championships; a national championship in the NJCAA women’s track and field championships in 1997; As cross country coach, we won two NJCAA women’s national championships in 1988 and 1989 when the number of NJCAA teams competing was much more than it is today; I received two NJCAA national cross country coach of the year awards in 1988 and 1989, and four NJCAA national track and field coach of the year in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2000.
I served a mission in Brazil from 1971-73 and have returned three times to teach athletic courses in the state of Sao Paulo. I will be teaching there in 2012 and working on a project to help Brazilian youth get out of the slum areas through the use of sport in 2013.
I am married to my best friend, Paula Benson Sonderegger. We have been married for 36 years. We have five children and seven grandchildren whom we dearly love. I got into coaching because of my father who became the head football and track coach at Ricks College in 1956. He had a great influence on me as I followed him around the campus at the age of four.
