What are the best things to eat, and do I need to take vitamins?

  • Healthy Diet
    You should eat healthy foods throughout your life. Healthy eating can help prevent diabetes and high blood pressure before, during, and after your pregnancy.

    Other things you can do to help your pre-pregnancy health are:
    • • Cook all meat fully, including raw meat, lunch meat and hotdogs (beef, pork, poultry, seafood and shellfish)
    • • Eat only pasteurized dairy products and pasteurized eggs
    • • Wash raw fruits and vegetables before eating
    • • Do not eat game fish, which are high in mercury, such as shark, swordfish, King mackerel, and tile fish. Limit tuna to 2 (3 oz.) servings per week

    A healthy diet is low in processed and high-fat foods. It is high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Visit ChooseMyPlate.gov to learn how to have a healthy diet. You will also learn how to eat healthy on a budget.

  • Vitamins
    You can lower the risk of having a baby with brain and spine problems by adding folic acid to your diet. All women who have started their periods should take a multi vitamin that has 400 micrograms of folic acid every day.

    You may need a higher dose of folic acid if:
    • • You have had a baby with brain or spine problems
    • • You or your husband have a family member with brain or spine problems
    • • You have other health problems

    New research has shown that if you take folic acid before and during your pregnancy, you may be able to lower the risk of your baby having autism. We are looking forward to more research in this area.
