Family Health History :
Is it important for me to know the health problems of my family members, my husband, and his family members?

Some genetic conditions occur in patterns within families, and can affect the health of your baby. It is important to talk to your doctor about your family health history as well as your husband’s family health history before you get pregnant. Your doctor can help you to understand the amount of risk your baby might have. This information will help you and your husband to make decisions about family planning. It will help your doctor to give you excellent care during your pregnancy. Here are some conditions you may want to discuss with your doctor:

  • Problems with blood (bleeding, clotting, anemia, etc.)
  • Deafness
  • Developmental delay or intellectual disabilities
  • Early infant death
  • Heart defects
  • Brain and spinal cord problems
  • Cancers
  • Body malformations
  • Mouth or facial cleft
  • Two or more pregnancy losses
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Other genetic problems
