Bleeding in early pregnancy is common, but it could be life-threatening because there is a small chance you could have an ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside of the uterus.) It is also important to know your blood type, especially the Rh factor of your blood type. It will appear as a positive (+) or a negative (-) after the letter of your blood type (A, B, AB, O). If you have a negative Rh factor and you have any bleeding you will need to see your doctor for a RhoGAM injection. If your baby’s Rh factor is positive, and your Rh factor is negative, it could be life-threatening to you and your baby in future pregnancies. If you have bleeding any time in pregnancy, the shot can stop your body from making antibodies against the baby’s blood. This shot is not treatment for possible miscarriage, but it can protect your health, your baby’s health and the health of your future pregnancies. If your bleeding occurs before 12 weeks of pregnancy, you will likely get a lower dose of RhoGAM.
