Ever sat in class and heard someone’s insulin pump go off but don’t know who it is? Many students at BYU-Idaho have Diabetes or know of someone who does. We want to make sure they don’t feel like they are alone. The Diabetes support group allows new students to find student mentors to help answer their questions with real life experience. It also creates a friendly environment to learn from Diabetes Educators about diverse topics regarding your health and diabetes management in college. All are welcome.
Diabetes is the condition in which the body does not properly process food for use as energy. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugars to build up in your blood. This is why many people refer to diabetes as “sugar.”
Gestational Diabetes- is a condition in which women without previously diagnosed diabetes exhibit high blood glucose levels during pregnancy
