BYU-I Geology Museum
The BYU-I Geology Museum is curated by the department and houses small, but exceptional collections of minerals, rocks, and fossils. The crown-jewel of the museum is the Keith and Mauna Proctor Mineral Collection. This collection is extraordinary in its quality and beauty. It includes extensive specimens of many mineral varieties and forms, including a 30 cm (12 in) long, green tourmaline crystal.
In the hallway near the museum a ¼ scale model of a nanotyrannus dinosaur is on display. This model is a favorite attraction for visiting public school children. It was created and donated to the Department of Geology by Ricks College alum, Bryce Davis in 2003.
Other collections within the department include the Dr. Lowell Biddulph Collection and a collection of minerals, rocks, and fossils from the northwestern U.S. donated by the Fremanida Gem and Mineral Club. These two collections are housed in display cabinets in hallways on the main floor of the Romney Building.
In addition to the main museum and the collections mentioned above, there are other extensive display cases along the northern and eastern hallways of the Romney Building's main floor. Most of these display cases are currently under renovation with new displays being prepared. In the future they will house examples of Earth's evolution and history, and different examples of igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary rocks, and invertebrate fossils.
We thank you for your patience during this time of display revitalization in the Romney building.
We have plans for updating the displays that may run for a while.
We look forward to being able to present a more enjoyable and informative display to the public.
