Brigham Young University-Idaho Geology Society

The purpose of the BYU-Idaho Geology Society is to help students obtain the best possible education while here at BYU-Idaho, be prepared to enter graduate schools that best fit their interests, and network with industry representatives in order to obtain quality internships and employment.

The society was organized during the 2001-2002 academic year. In the Fall of 2004 the society became affiliated with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists ( AAPG ), becoming a student chapter of that organization. In association with the Biology Department, the society is affiliated with the National Science Teachers Association ( NSTA ) and the society is currently looking into organizing student chapters of other societies related to mining and environmental geology as well.

As a society, we plan Geology Department forums where working geologists visit and speak to the department. We also sponsor weekend fieldtrips to areas of interest. The society is most active during the Fall and Winter since there are few students on the university's summer track. We are constructing a directory for students that will include a list of internship and employment opportunities, graduate schools, alumni, and advice regarding which classes will best help students prepare for specific sub-disciplines within geology. We invite interested students to join the Geology Society in order to help them get the most out of their experience at BYU-Idaho.
