Science Foundations

Course Description

An introduction to the nature, practice, power, and limitations of science, as well as relationships between science and religion, and science and society. These topics are explored through the study of selected episodes of scientific discovery that demonstrate methodical and creative aspects of scientific inquiry, and the self-correcting nature of science.

Content and Topics
  1. Help students become scientists with a small "s" by increasing scientific interest, scientific literacy, and scientific awareness.
  2. Prepare students for success in "Issues of Science" courses.
  3. Prepare students to understand scientific issues as parents, citizens, and as members of the Church.
  4. Strengthen testimonies.
Goals and Objectives  

Students will:

  1. Explain the complementary natures of scientific and religious inquiry.
    1. Be able to identify and reconcile apparent conflicts.
  2. Know and be able to apply the process of science to a variety of disciplines.
    1. Demonstrate how exploration & discovery, testing ideas, community analysis   & feedback, and consideration of benefits & outcomes contribute to the development of scientific knowledge and theories.
    2. Illustrate the process of science in the development of major theories in astronomy, chemistry, geology, and biology, as well as other disciplines.
    3. Apply science personally and generally to their daily life.
    4. Evaluate the validity of scientific claims
  3. Become excited about science and appreciate its usefulness (What it can do)   
    1. Show an increased positiveattitude towards science and scientists.
Course Requirements
    • Complete assigned readings and pre-class work before attending class during which those topics are discussed
    • Attend all class meetings
    • Regularly participate in class discussions
    • Attend and actively participate in all required peer group meetings
