If you are applying for VA Dependents benefits (ch 35) for the first time, read and complete the following:

  1. Before you apply, make sure you know your parent's file number or social securtiy number and sufix letter or number.
  2. Complete online Dependents Educational Assistance (Form 22-5490). When the page loads, click on "Start VONAPP".  Follow the instructions and when complete, submit it electronically to the VA.  You will also need to print out a copy and submit it to BYU-Idaho (see contact information below).
  3. We will only certify classes that count toward graduation at BYU-Idaho.  We recommend that you contact your academic advisor at BYU-Idaho to determine which classes count toward graduation.  Make sure that everything is properly declared on your graduation report.  You can view your graduation report from your personal BYU-Idaho account (my.byui.edu).  When the page loads, select "Graduation Report" from the Student Services Menu.  Also, the Career and Academic Advising office may also assist you.  You can contact them at (208) 496-1167.
  4. Each semester, after you have registered for classes at BYU-Idaho and you are sure that you are not going to add or drop any more classes, e-mail our office at taylors@byui.edu.  In the body of your email include your name and your BYU-I identification number.  Specify the semester you would like us to certify with the VA.

Note: Because this is your first time receiving VA benefits, the process will take approximately 2 months before you will receive your first disbursement.  If you have any questions, please contact Spencer Taylor at (208) 496-1394.
