National SMART Grant

The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant, also known as the National Smart Grant is available during the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major. The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.

A National SMART Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third (Junior) and fourth (Senior) years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security.

To be eligible for each academic year, a student must:

Be a U.S. citizen (Awards for 2009-10 and beyond will include eligible non-citizens)
Be a Federal Pell Grant recipient
Be enrolled full-time in a degree program (12 semester credits) and taking at least 1 class listed in the Major Requirements (Awards for 2009-10 will include those attending at least half-time)
Be enrolled in a four-year degree-granting institution
Major in Computer Science (440), Electrical and Computer Engineering (450), Mechanical Engineering (470), Exercise and Sports Science (480 & 481), Ecology, Wildlife and Fisheries (485 & 487), Animal Science (645), Applied Mathematics (650), Information Systems (680), Computer Information Technology (681), Informatics (683), Biology (700), Chemistry (710), Geology (740), or Physics (770).
Have at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale

No separate applications are required for this grant. BYU-I will evaluate each student for eligibility. If eligible, awards will be made automatically.
