Applying for FAFSA Early

Beginning with the 2017-2018 academic year, students will be able to file their 2017–2018 FAFSA as early as Oct. 1, 2016. This earlier submission date is a permanent change, enabling students to complete and submit their FAFSA early every year.

As part of this change, students will now report income and tax information from an earlier tax year, or a "prior prior year." For example, on the 2017–2018 FAFSA, you—and your parent(s), as appropriate—will report your 2015 income and tax information, rather than your 2016 income and tax information. For more information about early taxes, please see the federal aid website.

The best and easiest way to report your tax information through FAFSA is to use the Data Retrieval Tool (DRT). Using the DRT will save you time and effort, you won't have to find your tax records or request them from the IRS. Best of all you won't have to worry about making any mistakes, as everything is uploaded directly into your FAFSA from the IRS website. For more information about the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT), please visit our website.
