Q: How long is my contract? 

A: By default, subsidized phone contracts are 24 months, but you can also request a 12-month contract. The upfront cost for phones is greater for 12-month contracts. 

Q: How do I know when can I upgrade my phone?

A: Your upgrade becomes available on the first day of the month when your contract expires. For example, if your contract expires on 6/20/17, you may order an upgrade on 6/1/17. You can find this date by texting the word "upgrade" to the number 1311. You will receive a response with your upgrade date within one minute. Q: Can I switch to a different phone? 

A: If you are still under contract and would like to switch your number to another device you own or have purchased, there is no activation fee. Your line must have been active on the BYUI Sprint account for more than 60 days or you will be charged a cold device fee. (See Additional Fees section for more information.) This swap will not change your contract commitment and you will not be eligible for the BYOD plan until your contract expires. Your device must be a Sprint phone or an unlocked iPhone 6 or newer. We are only able to bring the following unlocked Android devices on to the network: Google Nexus 5, 5X, 6, 6P, Moto G4, G4 Play, G4 Plus, Moto X Pure, Pixel, Pixel XL, Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 Edge Special Edition.  

Q: Can I change my number?

A: You may change your phone number by contacting the Sprint Department. There is no charge for this service. We can request a specific area code for your new number, but the rest of the phone number is randomly assigned by Sprint. 

Q: What is Optimized Data?

A: Optimized data means streaming is optimized for video at up to 480p resolution, music streams at up to 500kbps, and online gaming streams at up to 2mbps. Data is unlimited 4G LTE for most everything else. 

Q: What's a hotspot? 

A: Smart phones can be used as an Internet connection through a service known as a hotspot. When the hotspot feature is activated, smart phones can supply Internet access to nearby computers, tablets, and other devices. The hotspot for each line on the BYUI Sprint account is limited to 5GB per month at 4G LTE data speeds. After 5GB, it will be limited to 256kbps speeds. You will not be charged for overages.  

Q: Can I change or cancel my contract plan? 

A: Because you are under a 1 or 2-year contract with Sprint, if you wish to cancel early, there will be an early termination fee. If you want to change from a smart phone to a previously owned basic phone, or vice versa, there will be no charge. Your pricing plan will change, but your contract commitment will not. Customer service representatives in the Sprint Department can assist you with plan questions, concerns, and changes.

Q: What about the subsidy my department pays? 

A: Departmental subsidies are available for employees required by their employment to have a mobile phone. Please contact your department secretary for details regarding phone subsidies and forms needed. Subsidies are not handled by the Sprint Department.  

Q: How do I keep my Verizon/AT&T number if I move to Sprint?

A: When you want to keep your current phone number but switch to Sprint, this is referred to as porting. To port your number, you will need your previous provider account number, security PIN, account name and billing address. Your number will not be ported over to Sprint until your new phone has arrived and you are ready to switch. Once the number is ported, your account with your old provider will be cancelled.  

Q: Why can't I get texts from businesses, my child's school, my bank, etc.?

A: Short code texting is used by many businesses to communicate with a large group of people in a quick and efficient manner. Sometimes, third parties can charge your Sprint phone number for things through this type of texting. These charges may be valid or, in some cases, fraudulent. BYU Idaho and Sprint are not responsible for these charges, so if they appear on your bill, they will be the customer's responsibility to pay. BYU Idaho has blocked short code texting for the whole account, but we can enable it on a line-by-line basis for all short codes or a specific code.
