Class Outline

What are angels and who are angels? Angels of the Lord are messengers who minister among mortals. They have had prominent roles in all gospel dispensations and their sacred work continues in our own dispensation. The prophets have revealed important truths regarding angels and their role in restoring keys, their extraordinary capabilities, and their missions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Our living prophets describe the following categories of angels: Pre-mortal spirits (Rev. 12:7; D&C 130:5); translated beings (Joseph Smith, Teachings, 170; 3 Ne. 28:6-7, 30; D&C 7); "Spirits of just men made perfect" (Heb. 12:22-24; D&C 129:1-3; Joseph Smith, Teachings, 325); and resurrected persons (D&C 129:1-2). See also the LDS Bible Dictionary, 608.
  2. Elders Dallin H. Oaks and Jeffrey R. Holland have taught the importance of angels to each of us (Elder Dallin H. Oaks, "The Aaronic Priesthood and the Sacrament," CR, Oct. 1998; Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, "The Ministry of Angels," CR, Oct. 4, 2008).
  3. Angels have power over the elements, thus enabling them to bless lives in unusual ways (Judges 6:20-21; 13:20; Exod. 3:2; Rev. 7:1; 14:18; 16:3-5, 12; JS-H 1:30, 43).
  4. Angels possess extraordinary capabilities and powers, which enable them to fulfill their missions (Rev. 5:2; 10:1-6; 18:1-2; 21; Mosiah 27:11, 18; 3 Ne. 17:24; D&C 77:8).
  5. During our own dispensation, angels have restored various keys (D&C 13; 84:26; 107:20; 110; 128:20-21; President Joseph F. Smith, Gospel Doctrine, 142).
