Brent Whiting Bean is the fourth son of Jim and Bettylou Bean. He was born in Orem, Utah and graduated from Payson High School. He attended Ricks College then served an LDS mission in Lisbon, Portugal. He returned from his mission and graduated from Utah Valley Community College with an associate’s degree. He then attended Utah State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Family and Human Development. He was hired as a teacher for the Church Educational System and taught Seminary in American Falls for seven years. Bean graduated with a master's degree from Idaho State University in Organizational Communication in 1998.
He was hired that fall to teach in the communication department at Ricks College, which has now become Brigham Young University-Idaho. Bean is entering his 15th school year as an instructor in the Department of Communication, where he teaches Conflict Management, Interpersonal Communication, and Public Speaking. Bean completed his doctoral studies with the University of Idaho, and earned his Ph.D in May of 2010. His doctoral studies focused on the qualities and characteristics of transformation and the potential for positive change in people's lives. Bean currently resides in Rexburg, Idaho with his wife, Gaylynn Owen. They have five children, four sons and one daughter. Brent enjoys golfing, hiking, biking, running, camping, and spending time with his family.
