Student Disability Grievance Procedure
Faculty members and individual campus administrative units are responsible to make reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities in order to remove barriers to the accessibility of University programs and activities resulting from a disability. They are encouraged to contact the Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) office in the David O. McKay Library 158, extension 1158, for general accommodation assistance for students with disabilities. While it is anticipated that most accommodation requests will be informally resolved at the lowest level of decision-making feasible, occasionally the effort of accommodation may be unsatisfactory to the student. In such cases, the student may initiate a grievance by submitting a written request for a specific accommodation together with appropriate medical or other documentation to the Manager of the Equal Employment Office who designated as BYU-Idaho's Section 504 Coordinator (see Student Academic Grievance Policy and Student Non-discrimination Policy for non-disability grievances).
As the Section 504 Coordinator, the Associate Academic Vice President for Instruction (Kimball Building 210, Phone 208-496-1140), will make a preliminary investigation of the facts and circumstances of the matter and convene a meeting among the affected individuals and entities in an attempt to reach a consensus as to a reasonable accommodation. Those to be included in the meeting are the affected student, a designated representative of the faculty member or administrative unit, as the case may be, and the director of SSD and/or a representative of Planning, Physical Facilities, if the grievance involves their areas of responsibility.
If an agreement satisfactory to all of the parties to the meeting is not reached, the Manager of the Equal Employment Office will notify the Dean of Students who will appoint a three-member review panel consisting of a faculty, administrative or staff person; a member of the University Disability Issues Advisory Committee; and a student with similar disability. The panel shall review the request for accommodation, conduct an investigation as it determines is reasonable and necessary, and make a recommendation for disposition of the request to the vice president who has administrative responsibly for the area in which the accommodation is requested. The vice president shall make the final University determination with respect to the requested accommodation.
