Mechanical Engineering Coursework

During their freshman and sophomore years, BYU-Idaho mechanical engineering students take courses in math and science which provide a strong technical foundation for the mechanical engineering-specific courses that they will take as juniors and seniors. Foundation courses provide a well-rounded education and prepare students for the rigors of an engineering education. The core mechanical engineering courses and elective emphasis areas are listed below.

Core Mechanical Engineering Courses

In addition to foundational physics, chemistry and math courses, mechanical engineering students take courses in engineering mechanics (statics, dynamics and strength of materials), computer aided design (CAD), computational methods, material science, and manufacturing processes.  Core junior- and senior-level mechanical engineering coursework includes:

  • ME 305 – Mechatronics and Measurement Systems I
  • ME 310 – Mechatronics and Measurement Systems II
  • ME 322 – Thermodynamics I
  • ME 342 – Engineering Computation II
  • ME 360 – Fluid Mechanics
  • ME 370 – Machine Design
  • ME 380 – ME Design II: Product Design
  • ME 423 – Heat Transfer

In addition to the core courses discussed above, mechanical engineering students take at least 6 credits of general mechanical engineering elective courses, or 12 credits of elective courses in one of the following emphasis areas:

Graduates

Students that have graduated with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from BYU-Idaho have gone to work at companies across the United States and internationally.
