Individual Counseling

Our professional staff of licensed psychologists and social workers provide free therapy for matriculated students, registered for a minimum of six credits, who are struggling with mental health and behavioral issues as well as unmet emotional needs. These problems may include depression, anxiety, stress management, self-esteem issues, marital conflict, eating disorders, family of origin conflict, physical/emotional/sexual abuse, sexual assault trauma, and a wide variety of other distressing issues.
During the Consultation, a counselor will work with the student to determine the most appropriate form of treatment. Workshop, individual, group, or couples counseling may be recommended. If medication is indicated, the counselor can refer to the Student Health Center or to the Counseling Center physician. Students will be expected to regularly attend sessions that are scheduled and show an active effort to work during the counseling sessions and between sessions. Doing so will bring the greatest benefits and results to the student.

Couples Counseling

The Counseling Center provides both pre-marital and marital counseling. At least one member of the couple must be a matriculated student, registered for a minimum of six credits, to be eligible for our services.

A successful model of couples therapy used by some of our counselors is Emotionally Focused Therapy, or EFT.

All group counseling is by referral of a counselor within our office; therefore, a student must first schedule an individual appointment with a counselor before they may attend any of the group sessions offered at the Counseling Center. To schedule an individual appointment with a counselor, please call (208) 496-9370.

Group counseling is a form of counseling that has been found very effective for many problems that students face. For a number of situations, researchers have found that group is the treatment of choice. In a group, individuals with similar concerns are able to offer each other tremendous support and understanding, as well as solutions on how to skillfully cope with or resolve problems. Group participants often comment on the significant benefit they have gained from group work. Groups are led by one or two trained counselors, are held weekly, and last either 60 or 90 minutes, depending on the type of group. Typically, five to eight individuals will make up a group.

Joining a Group

All group counseling is by referral of a counselor within our office; therefore, a student must first schedule an individual appointment with a counselor before they may attend any of the group sessions offered at the Counseling Center. Together, you and your assigned therapist will determine which group will best meet your needs. If you are a returning group member you may contact your previous group facilitator through email or by calling our office at (208) 496-9370. Groups are open to all matriculated students, registered for a minimum of six credits. They are free of charge and last through the end of the current semester.
