Simultaneous chromatography and electrophoresis (SCE) combines an electric field orthogonal to capillary action (Figure 1). Compounds are separated according to their charge-to-mass ratio and polarity. Previous work has demonstrated that a buffered mobile phase is unable to alter the pH of the silica gel during analysis. Thus, separations are similar despite pH (not shown). This work investigates the effects of preconditioning TLC plates on SCE separations.
