1.What is the difference between AFY, OYA, and YFE?

  • Adventure For Youth (AFY) participants go whitewater rafting on the Snake River, experience challenging activities on the BYU-Idaho campus, and go to the Rexburg Temple. Devotionals, dances, and counselor-led gospel discussions help complete this adventure.
  • Outdoor Youth Adventure (OYA) is held exclusively at Badger Creek Ranch located at the base of the Teton Mountains. OYA is a spiritual five-day adventure of its own with challenging outdoor workshops, group activities, and daily scripture study. OYA now has whitewater rafting.
  • Youth For Excellence (YFE) in Palmyra, New York, and Nauvoo, Illinois, is a different kind of adventure where participants experience a hands-on approach to studying LDS Church history. Explore Palmyra or Nauvoo during this 5-day adventure with a seasoned CES instructor as your personal tour guide.

3.How do I switch my registration from EFY to AFY, OYA, or YFE?

EFY is administered by Continuing Education at BYU in Provo, while AFY, OYA, and YFE are administered by the Continuing Education office at BYU-Idaho. Funds are not transferable between the two universities. You may register at any time for AFY, OYA, or YFE, but that registration is completely independent of EFY. You may transfer between AFY, OYA, and YFE but there is a transfer fee of $25.

4.What ages may attend AFY, OYA, and YFE?

Participants for AFY and OYA should be youth between the ages of 14 and 18 while participants for YFE should be youth between the ages of 16 and 19.

All participants should be the minimum age by September 1 of the year they attend and should not exceed the maximum age before the first day of the session they will attend.

5.How many roommates can I request?

One for AFY. For OYA, we do not assign roommates, youth are assigned according to activity groups, which are based on age. YFE can have up to three.

Notice: Continuing Education reserves the right to make roommate or group assignments according to the needs of the program. We will try and accommodate roommate requests but do not guarantee that the roommate request will be granted. To make a roommate request or group request, email Continuing Education at youthprograms@byui.edu.

6.I want to room with my friend/cousin/brother/sister who is older/younger. Is that possible?

Roommates must be the same gender for all programs. We try to assign roommates or groups so that members are the same age or no more than one year apart. For YFE participants, there are no group restrictions for roommates.
