Teacher Professional Development and Recertification: Main Info

What is Teacher Professional Development?

Teacher Professional Development courses are those structured and instructed by local school districts.  Visit the calendar page for dates and times of courses.

What is Teacher Recertification?

Teacher recertification credit is credit needed to renew your teaching license or keep your license current.  Please check with your State Office of Education for the most current requirements for recertification.  Most university credit will apply, but you should check to make sure the course you are planning to take will "count" for your needs.

Professional Development and Recertification Credit Options

There are two options for credit.

First:  Local School District Approved Courses

Many local school districts have professional development courses approved for BYU teacher in-service credit. The cost is minimal to the teacher and the credit is recorded on a BYU Provo transcript. Credits available are Elementary Education (EL ED), Secondary Education (SC ED) or Counseling Psychology and Special Education (CPSE) 514R. These courses can be used to achieve a lane change or keep your teaching license current.

Second: Directed One-Student Class

In this option a participant contracts with a BYU-Idaho instructor on a one-on-one basis. Credit is variable from 1-3 credits and requires that the candidates have a Bachelor's degree prior to registration. Credits available are the same as those listed in the first option.

Cost Information

Cost varies according to course.
