MCCOY, KELLY |
Teaching Our Children to Deal With Disappointing Behavior in a Healthy Way |
One of the biggest challenges parents and children must face as children grow is how to respond when children behave in ways that fall short of both the parents' and children's expectations. Children should have high expectations for themselves, but parents also need to teach children how to respond when the children fall short of the expectations they have for themselves. New research demonstrates that children who respond with guilt to their own disappointing behavior are much more likely to learn from their mistakes than those who respond with shame. This same research demonstrates that parents play a major role in determining how children are likely to respond when they make mistakes or engage in disappointing behavior. |
