Freshman Academy: Learning Communities

Grouping students together in classes and housing units creates a community of learners who have the opportunity to help one another succeed in college and understand the importance of service. With the help of the faculty, peer mentors, and fellow students, new freshman may gain an academic advantage that otherwise could take years to discover.

Which Learning Community is Right for Me?

FA has 8 learning communities (LC) to choose from based upon general education requirements. They are:

A Few Points of Special Information

First, we encourage you to read through and study the BYU-Idaho Catalog to see how each of the classes will fit into your academic plan. Requirements for each major and minor are clearly listed in the catalog. We also encourage you to visit with BYU-I Career & Academic Advising to discuss your options. They can help you formulate an academic plan and help get you started in your academic career.

The science course, PH 127, fulfills GE Physical Science requirements. Many majors and minors require a specific class from the list of Physical Science classes. Knowing the requirement for your future major/minor will help eliminate duplication of credits. Science requirements, perhaps more than any other GE requirements, are very major specific.  Before registering, please refer to the BYU-Idaho Catalog for GE requirements for your specific major.

If you have existing college credit (AP, concurrent, other), please contact the Student Records and Registration at (208) 496-1001 to determine if that credit fulfills requirements of the classes within FA (you would not want to enroll in the LC with ENG 250 if you took the AP English course that fulfills that GE requirement).
